Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Apple Vision OCR) from a scan of a newspaper page, and the page was cut into articles by machine, at the headlines found by their type size. Nothing has been corrected: expect misread words, text from a neighbouring article, and titles that are the machine reading of the headline, some of them only fragments. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: headline found by type size in the OCR geometry (split_tabloid.py); 1-3 of 6; machine-segmented newspaper page; uncorrected Vision OCR.

HUNDREDS of thousands of health workers took to the streets and the picket lines this week.

The three day industrial action was the latest step in the campaign of health workers to fight for a 12 per cent pay increase and help save the NHS. The response of the hospital workers was magnificent in the face of the TUC sell out of ASLEF and a barrage of attacks from the media. And despite threats of disciplinary action to civil servants and other workers, the health workers were joined by thousands of other trade unionists. The train drivers know from bitter experience that they needed the full weight of the labour movement to win their fight. Hospital workers are now in the front line. They must not fight alone.
